YOU DECIDE: Subway Super Bowl?
I forget what channel I was watching today, but it was one of the many sports networks that suddenly experienced this weekends epiphany that the Jets and the Giants could quite possibly face each other in Super Bowl XLIII. One of the reporters referred to it as a “Subway Super Bowl” because if both New York teams are in it, they could just hold the game at Giants Stadium and the subway is how people will get there.
News flash: There are no subways in Jersey.
Second news flash: The Jets may be leading their division at this moment in time (and by leading their division, they’re beating the Patriots, and that makes me pleased), but be serious. Even if they were leading the entire conference, once they get in the Playoffs, their current standings mean absolutely nothing. Sure they’ve only lost 3 games so far this season – for the New York Jets, that is quite the accomplishment - but never forget that the Patriots lost 0 games all last season. Well… 0 losses until… the big one.
That still makes me laugh.
Am I biased in this? Certainly. I’ve been a Giants fan since I was 7 or so. Super Bowl XLII was by far the highlight of my Giants fan career, considering often times being a Giants fan is a really difficult lifestyle choice. Even now, that they’re 10-1, it’s exciting, shocking even, but the Playoffs are sudden death – there are no guarantees, all it takes is one mistake (ask Tony Romo). They’re playing well and that’s encouraging, but the Giants also have a history of being incredibly inconsistent, proving that especially this October when they gave the Cleveland Browns their first of only 3 wins of the season in week 6 (the Giants only loss of the season thus far).
And the Jets may be doing well this year so far, especially with the help of #4, but I certainly believe week 12 (of 17) is too early to make Super Bowl predicitions, especially when the Titans are leading the AFC and the Steelers are neck and neck with the Jets at 8-3. Neither the AFC or the NFC have any stand-out leaders this season, but give it at least another 2 or 3 weeks before you start even thinking about the Super Bowl.
So, to sum up:
- I won’t believe the Jets have a chance in the Super Bowl until I see it with my own eyes in January, and even with that possibility…
- I’m going on record now saying this is not the season the New York Jets will make it to the Super Bowl – it’ll be a long time before we see New York face off in an NFL championship game.
- Even if the Jets are leading their division (as are the Giants), there are still 5 weeks left in the NFL regular season, and it’s too early for predictions.
- Brett Favre was obviously a huge help to the Jets this year, but he’s not a miracle worker (remember that the Jets were 4-12 last season). And on that note, hopefully BF will retire (and stay retired) after this season ends. I can’t deal with the drama anymore.
- IF the Giants and the Jets were to face each other in Super Bowl XLIII, the Jets would be the underdogs, and as much I love me some underdog victory, the Giants will crush them.
- New Jersey doesn’t have as subway system, so the only way it would be called a Subway Super Bowl is if the Subway sandwich place is sponsoring it. Then again, this isn’t NASCAR.
So now you tell me. Without even taking into account the 10-1 defending Super Bowl Champ New York Giants who are currently leading the NFC by 2 wins (because given everything I just said, predicting they’ll be in the Super Bowl isn’t completely unreasonable, albeit still too early for my taste), what do you think about the Jets? Basing your decision off of 12 weeks of football, whaddya say?
